Bengals Sign FS Williams to Bolster Defense
The Cincinnati Bengals and former Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams, the free safety not the receiver, have agreed to terms to add to their rebuilding efforts. Williams was released following the 2008 season by the Cowboys and will now join up with a familiar face. Mike Zimmer, Cincinnati’s defensive coordinator, used to coach Williams while they were both in Dallas. During that time, Williams had some of the best numbers of his career.
The terms of the deal aren’t yet known. What is known is he will really add experience and talent to a struggling team looking for redemption.
Bengals Deactivate Johnson For Thursday Night’s Game
The Cincinnati Bengals have deactivated wide receiver Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson for Thursday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bengals organization have only released that Johnson has been benched for this AFC North division rivalry due to violating team rules.
The Bengals have not made any other statements other than more information will be made available after tonights game. This move could really hurt the Bengals’ chances to upset and get another win on the season to help their disappointing 1-8-1 record. Cincinnati tied week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFL’s first tie since 2003 when the Steelers tied the Falcons 34-34.
Bengals and Lions Racing To An 0-16 Finish
Two team remain winless in the NFL eight games in; the Cincinnati Bengals and the Detroit Lions. Now the question is, will these teams be able to pull off a win at all during the course of the season? Bengals’ wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh guarantees they will win more than one game this season. He remains optimistic, so much so that he has wagered that if the Bengals do not win a single game this season he will walk from his house in Cerritos, California to the NFL Network studios in Culver City, which is about 27 miles.
So can the Bengals do it? Their remaining schedule includes this week’s game at home against the Jaguars then a bye. Following the bye they have the Eagles, Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Redskins, Browns and Chiefs. The way each of these teams are playing the only team they might be able to beat looks like the Chiefs and thats a toss up. It may just be turning into a playoff game for the worst record in the NFL, which means the first round draft pick.
Really the Bengals have the best chance of not going 0-16, the Detroit Lions have a more harsh schedule remaining. They have the Bears this Sunday, then the Jaguars, Panthers, Buccaneers, Titans, Vikings, Colts, Saints and Packers. All are playoff contending teams, with the only exception being the Vikings, who may fall off and be the only chance the Lions have of not going winless. The one thing that may help the Lions to a win this season could be with the signing of veteran quarterback Dante Culpepper who is in talks with the team and could be close to a deal.
Bengals Sign Former Bear Benson
The Cincinnati Bengals made a move to take DeDe Dorsey’s spot, by signing running back Cedric Benson. Benson had recently been cut by the Chicago Bears following some legal trouble. Dorsey is in his third year, playing the first four games of this season but succumbed to a hamstring injury last Sunday when they played Cleveland.
Benson had decent numbers while starting for the Bears. That decent success stems from his college days, totally 5,540 yards and 64 touchdowns, the third-most in the NCAA’s history. He was then drafted by the Bears in the 2005 NFL Draft, the fourth overall.
With the Bears, Benson started 12 times over his three year career. He played in 35 games overall, rushing for 1,593 yards over 420 carries and 10 touchdowns. Benson has also hauled in some passes, 26 total for 180 yards. During the postseason run in 2006 to the Super Bowl, he racked up 104 yards a touchdown and 24 yards receiving.
Benson had missed five games last season with an ankle injury, but was still able to total his career high in rushing yards, 674, 17 receptions over 123 yards.
Browns Consider Benching Anderson for Quinn
When your team goes 0-3 on the season, some changes definitely need to be made, and fast. The Cleveland Browns are that 0-3 team and head coach Romeo Crennel is threatening some changes. The decisions have yet to be made, but a possible change at quarterback looms near. Would the Browns really bench Derek Anderson?
Crennel would not commit to an answer but they did say they would have the backup, Brady Quinn, ready to go. They will go over the situation very closely but it isn’t impossible that Quinn could start next week against the Cincinnati Bengals.
“I think we have to look at all positions,” said Crennel. “I think we’ll definitely try to get the other guy ready to go, and we’ll see how he progresses from there.”
This won’t be an easy decision. Up until now, Anderson has been getting all the reps in practice. Now, Quinn will get some of those reps but that doesn’t mean he is a for sure change. The Browns believed Anderson was their best chance to win all throughout the Sunday’s game against the Ravens by not pulling him. Anderson was 14/37 for 125 yards and a touchdown on Sunday but wasn’t enough to come out on top. He has only completed 45.8 percent of his pass attempts this season. They definitely need to change something, but is Brady Quinn the answer?
Ike Forces NFL To Restructure Schedule
Because of the damage that Hurrican Ike did to Reliant Stadium in Houston, the Texans opening game on Monday, originally Sunday, has been postponed til week 10. The Texans and their opponent the Baltimore Ravens will have their bye weeks this week and will meet on November 9th for this game. This change will also upset the Cincinnati Bengals schedule as they will now have their bye week during week 10 and play the Texans in week 8.
